Bendewijn. Gang wine. A wine gang. Each small-batch wine is handcrafted by winemaker Albert Ahrens, one of the original Swartland revolutionaries and now “kissiewynmaker” sourcing from far & wide, operating out of a little cellar near Paarl.
Bottles are labelled with standard-issue South African postal tags, secured by some of the best waxing in the business, and handwritten bespoke for each recipient, whether a wine merchant, restaurant or individual.
The types of wines Albert makes for the “bende” are those from tiny parcels of grapes that may only run to a barrel or two, and wouldn’t fit in his core @the_ahrens_family range but are simply too good to turn down. And they only arrive a handful times a year.
